Manchester United FC versus Manchester City Football Club: Who’s Apparel is Better?

Manchester United vs Manchester city

The Manchester Derby, played twice a year, is fiercely contested both on and off the field. From the Manchester United Players to the Manchester City fans, there is no love lost between these two football clubs.

Even when they are not playing on the field, the fans carry on the battle off the field.

Here is one of my favorite videos about the rivalry:

All over the world, the fans of the Red Devils and the Cityzens can be seen wearing Manchester United apparel and Manchester City gear.

As a United fan, I own several items of Manchester United clothing. Let’s take a closer look, however, at which team has the better apparel.

In each category, each club’s apparel will be rated on a scale of 1-5 stars.

I will limit my analysis to the Official Stores of each team, which can be accessed by clicking below:

2018-2019 Kits

Both teams traditionally have classic kits that stand the test of time.

This season, however, I give a slight edge to Manchester City in terms of the main kit, primarily because United’s Kit is so bad this year. I think Adidas did MUFC a disservice by ditching the traditional white shorts for black ones, which combined with the black striping on the bottom of the jersey shirt looks sloppy in my opinion.

Nike, on the other hand, did a great job with MCFC’s Jersey, which sticks to the traditional Baby blue.  The design is very simple and clean, which I prefer over something that looks too “busy.”

In terms of the alternative kits, I give the edge to Manchester United FC.

While I like both MUFC’s pink kit as well as City’s black kit, the 3rd kit of United is far superior to City’s third kit.

The classic Navy Blue with gold United emblem is very tasteful, while the purple and orange of City’s third kit is trying to hard.

Scarves

Every self respecting Football fan must own at least one scarf from their favorite team.

With regard to scarves, I give the edge to Manchester United FC.

While both teams offer 18 items in their scarf selection, United has a greater variety of scarves offered, while all the scarves City offers look pretty similar.

United has scarves that match its road uniforms, as well as an “anniversary” scarf.

City does not have any options like this.

Branded Clothing

Both teams offer clothing featuring their club logo. Manchester City Football Club offers tee shirts, jackets, coats, polo shirts, and hats.

Most of these are fairly similar in that they are some variation of baby blue with the club logo. They do have a pretty cool “St. Marks collection, which is inspired by the original club jersey.

Manchester United FC branded clothing is strongly tied to its partnership with well-known brands of clothing.

Specifically, they want partner with well-known brands Columbia, New Era and True Religion in addition to its own line of clothing.

Most interesting is the True Religion line, which provides branded denim products, such as jean jackets and jeans.

This is unique, and I don’t believe I have seen it done by any other club.

Other Accessories

This is an area where Manchester United FC clearly has the edge over Manchester City Football Club.

MUFC has a line created by Fashion Designer Paul Smith, which includes accessories such as credit card holders, cuff links, ties, and socks.

Additionally, Manchester United FC has a line of watches from watchmaker Tag Heuer. While these watches are extremely expensive, the option is available for someone so inclined.

Manchester City Football Club does not offer the range of accessories that Manchester United does.

They do not offer anything designer or high end.

The most unique item they offer is official sunglasses, but even then they are low end products.

Other than the sunglasses, they only offer a few ties and a few pairs of socks.

Conclusion

Both teams offer a pretty good selection of items, but on overall apparel, I have to give a slight edge to Manchester United FC.

They offer a greater variety of products, with options to by branded items from major brands.

They also offer luxury items that Manchester City Football club does not offer as an option.

Sure, Manchester United FC has been criticized for its numerous brand tie ins, but for the consumer it is great to have a wide range of items from trusted brands.

Make no mistake, however, the products City does offer are very nice and likely satisfy the needs of City fans.

  1. Even though I’m a football fan, my club is Barcelona, so I basically don’t have a favorite in the English Premier league. Talking about the apparels of Man city and Man utd, I think both are great but I’ll choose Man utd just because I love anything with a touch of red. Man city’s clothes are also beautiful.

    1. I’ve actually seen Barca play twice in person..once in Sevilla and once  San Francisco where they LOST to United.  I had a great time, and all the Barca fans were pleasant.

  2. I’ll be honest, I dig the scarves. For one simple reason, I can wave them over the heads of any rival people that I’m watching the match against, ha! But seriously, I do like staying warm, and it’s generally the least expensive option. I like the jerseys too, but honestly, it’s always under my jacket unless I’m at the pub.

    1. I love the scarves too.  As a Yank, scarves aren’t as prevalent here as of yet. But as soccer grows here, they are getting more and more popular.  I can’t say I wear them to keep me warm thoug, as I live in California where it is usually mild.

  3. I am a self respecting football fan and I do own at least one scarf as you so pleasantly mentioned. Got to love football pride! With all that has happened in Manchester I’d say this apparel is a sure way of getting the spirit going. I like the classic blue design. I am a stickler when it comes to certain things they can be a bit nostalgic to me. Nice design and advertisement for the teams.

    1. Thanks for visiting. It was great to see the two rival clubs come together with the tragedy there.  I think it’s fun to tease each other but in the end we all love our cities and hopefully our fellow citizens.  One love!

  4. I like the way that you pitted the rivalry in terms of the apparel that is offered for each of the teams. I am sure that there is a lot of discussion and disparaging comments that the rival fans can use against one another, an extension of the rivalry on the field. That can provide a lot of entertainment all on its own, leaving out the actual games they play against one another.

It is all good fun and part of the draw that brings fans in closer and has them spending their money in one way or another, and is okay by me. I am not a fan of either club, so will watch the matches they have against one another just for fun to see which will prevail.

I do know that the apparel that all such teams have available can cost quite a bit of money, as I am a fan of another team in another sport on another continent (Minnesota Vikings, baby!), I looked through the comparisons you included for the two teams gear, and I have to say, I agree with your assessment almost 100%. You nailed it.

Part of the whole experience of enjoying a club and being a fan is wearing the apparel to show your support. If the enemies (while the game is being played, anyway)  have crappy gear all the better. Let them hear the snide comments and laughs from their foes.

I enjoyed looking at what is on offer for each of these teams, and there were only a couple of the shirts I would not wear (pink, the one with the diagonal stripe on the front). All the rest I could tolerate, and likely not make disparaging comments to fans who choose to wear the gear. Those two? Open season, baby!

    1. Thank you for visiting the site. Sometimes I think we forget how much Sports and loving our teams is such a huge part of our lives. As long as things can stay fun, you can make fun of me for liking a team that wears pink 😂

  5. What a great article.  Sporting apparel has become so popular in the world we live in.  Sport merchandising has become a multi billion dollar industry. Im not going to lie in man cases its hard to find quality merchandise.  In fact it seems lately that a lot of the new stuff out there is a fake knock off.  Shady sellers can sell for a lot less if they are selling fakes. Its nice to find a website that is selling authentic merchandise.  Thank you for taking the time to write such a great article.Dale

  6. Great article, though  I am a Chelsea football fan I do love both clubs they are big football clubs and love both their apparels though the Manchester United apparel is for more appreciated here in Africa fans are delighted this season than that of Manchester City and if I was to say which I love it would be Manchester City because I do love the touch of blue

  7. I really Enjoyed your site, a little bit of team rivalry between clothing!  Your blogs are interesting and easy to read, and you advertise a nice assortment of team sport shirts and scarves. I also made note of your comparison and preference between the teams, which made me take a second and third look. It gives the viewers and shoppers an opportunity to take a closer look before making hasty decisions, which I have done countless times. Also, you have a nice amount of variety to choose from, which makes it simple to shop, It’s nothing like having to dig through pages and getting bored. Thanks for sharing!
