Vintage Style Clothing For Sports Fans

vintage style clothing bulls jersey

If you are like me you love vintage style clothing.  There is just something about this type of apparel that takes me back to when I was younger and full of hope that my team might actually win a championship!

You will certainly be aware that I am partial to simpler styles and classic designs and colors if you have read any of my other posts on this blog.  Vintage style clothing certainly fits this bill.

If you love vintage style clothing, you have two basic choices. You can spend days on end digging through thrift stores looking for that perfect authentic item from the 90’s, or you can do what I like to do.

I use the internet to shop for either new or used vintage sports apparel.

Typically, I buy new items styled after old school gear. These items are easier to find. This saves lots of time, and ensures that you have a high quality, clean item.

From time to time, I have purchased actual used items from the 80’s and 90’s online. This usually takes more effort, but one can find these items.

Here are my suggestions on how to find the best vintage sports apparel.

Shop for Mitchell and Ness throwback items

Jackie Robinson MLB JerseyMitchell and Ness Nostalgia Company is the undisputed king of vintage sports apparel. They produce all sorts of throwback inspired items for fans, which the company designed to match the original as closely as possible.

I wrote a blog post recently discussing Mitchell and Ness, which discusses the company and many of the items they offer for sale. Check it out by clicking the link below.

Search Amazon

Amazon is a great resource for finding vintage sports apparel if you are willing to wade through a lot of items to find what you want.

When I ran a search for vintage sports apparel on amazon, I received 10,000 search results. This is a ton of inventory to choose from.

Amazon also has great prices, so you’ll likely be able to find that perfect item at the perfect price.

One item I recommend is the retro starter jacket. Amazon carries these items for the NBA, NFL and NHL. These jackets look just like the jackets we wore in the late 80’s.

There are also T-shirts from a company called 500 level that depicts old school players in a throwback inspired design. These come in both men’s and women’s versions. This is an awesome way to show your love for your favorite players of the past.

Find vintage style clothing on Fanatics.com

Another great resource for throwback inspired gear is Fanatics.com. Fanatics is my #1 rated website for purchasing sports apparel of all types. If you want to know more about why I highly recommend It, check out my review HERE.

One benefit to purchasing at Fanatics.com is the organization. Fanatics.Com organizes their items by team, so you don’t have to wade through items from teams you don’t care about.  This will allow you to find that item of vintage clothing for your favorite team much faster.

Find authentic vintage style clothing on eBay.

You might want to check eBay to find authentic vintage gear.  There are thousands of items of vintage sports apparel that you can shop in the comfort of your own home.

Ebay contains listings of items typically placed by individual sellers, so most of these items are previously owned. This will mean that the quality may be excellent or poor.

Ebay is a great place to find a 90’s style hat that is actually from the 90’s.

One of my favorite items that I saw was an actual from the 90’s team USA soccer jersey made by Nike.

Another item I really thought was cool was a vintage “Team Adidas” jacket. This definitely reminds me of my childhood.

I also love all of the random vintage high school and minor league apparel you can find on eBay, for teams nobody has likely heard of. These items are quite unique and will impress your friends.

PRO TIP: If you have a specific team or player in mind, search “Vintage + [team/player name]” in the eBay search bar, and it will find all the items for that team and/or player.

Check out SportsMemorabilia.com

To find something a little more impressive, perhaps an autographed item of vintage apparel or a framed vintage jersey, you should check out SportsMemorabilia.com. There are many awesome items available that are either framed or unframed.

I personally own an autographed Bo Jackson Raiders jersey. While it is not framed, I think I have only worn it once because it is very special to me.

While browsing through the website for this article, I discovered many items that I would love to own. A few of my favorites are the Hank Aaron autographed jersey and the Barry Sanders autographed jersey.

There are also one of a kind items, such as autographed Mickey Mantle jerseys.

The more rare the item, the more it is going to cost, but if you are in the market for luxury vintage sports apparel, this is a great place to shop.

  1. Thank you for listing a couple stores that I didn’t know carry vintage clothing. I mostly have been getting my vintage clothing from ” Market Place ” on facebook, ” Craigslist ” and our local thrift shops.
I will have to check out the store you have mentioned as they may have more to choose from.

  2. I love the vintage look as well for sportswear and agree with you on getting the new but closely matched to a vintage style unless you are going for the real thing for a particular sports team or personality. In the latter case, the sports memorabilia site is the way to go.

There are a few collectible items that I have purchased through the years from that site, as I am a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan since the age of 6. We had a neighbor growing up who was in the NFL Hall of Fame (Bronko Nagurski) and I used to listen to stories he told us at that age.

The jersey from that far back I generally cannot find, but I also have some from the Purple People Eater days of the 70s, and a couple from the 80s and 90s (i.e. Culpepper, Moss). These were guys that did great things for the team and I think back on those things when I look at the jerseys.

I hesitate to wear any of them, I want to leave them for the grandchildren, and I know that the more I do wear them, the more they will look that way. This is why I also have some of the vintage stuff that I really do wear often. These look great but have no memories associated with them…

Great places to find such apparel and you will have saved people time when it comes to them finding such vintage sports team gear…I do think that such clothing is still popular, or at least it is in the circles that I run in (Grumpy Old Men). Thanks for the information!

    1. Throwback sports apparel is always in style.  I see the younger generation wearing throwback apparel all the time and it makes me happy that the traditions will continue.

Thanks for stopping by and happy hunting!

  3. Consideringyhe rate of development and advancement in almost anything, from fashion to sport to technology, all this has made some of us go back to the oldies, appreciate our vintage wears. For me vintage does it anything any day anywhere. Before now I have always checked my local store for vintage wears but with this your article you have just giving me various ways on how I can get then with little effort. Thanks

  4. These are great sport apparels you have here. A really fantastic vintage collection. I’m a die hard Manchester united fan, and I wish I could lay my hands on the 1999 Manchester United’s Jersey. Would be a fantastic gift for my four year old son who is already a supporter like his dad. If you do out this up, I’ll be sure willing to buy
